Floods in San Diego coastal neighborhoods continue with surge of high tides
Flooding hit some low-lying beachfront communities along the San Diego County coastline this week as potentially record-breaking high tides rolled in.
A coastal flood warning took effect Monday along the entire San Diego County coast as unusually high tides were expected to exceed 8 feet, potentially breaking records, meteorologists said. The warning remains in effect through Thursday afternoon.
Pacific Beach and Mission Bay felt the impacts from Tuesday’s morning tides that NBC 7’s Meteorologist Greg Bledsoe said may end up being the highest of the week.
Water filled neighborhood streets and bike paths. The flooding brought enough water that one man took his paddleboard out to swim in it.

High tides does not indicate that the surf will elevate this week, Bledsoe added.
A berm built by San Diego city crews in Mission Beach to protect against high tide surges like this held Tuesday after portions were rebuilt by the city after Monday’s flooding.

In North County, beach communities fared better as the majority of infrastructure sits high above sea level, said NBC 7’s Todd Strain. The water came up high in Oceanside, a lifeguard tower normally on the beach was surrounded by waves.
High tides each day will occur in the morning and are 1.5 to 1.7 feet above astronomical tide predictions, the NWS said.
The agency warned that numerous roads may close, shoreline erosion will occur and coastal infrastructure managers or residents should prepare to protect their property.
San Diego residents could retrieve free, unfilled sandbags at some recreation centers across San Diego.
The NWS also advised not to drive around barricades or through water of unknown depths.
San Diego temperatures will cool with a slight shower chance on Friday, according to NBC 7’s Meteorologist Sheena Parveen. These chances continue into the weekend.
“Trick or treaters may need an umbrella,” said Parveen.
