‘Frustrating and odd problem': Shards of glass contaminate Swampscott school field

A Swampscott, Massachusetts, elementary school student was cut while on the school’s brand new field last month, which has caused school officials to take a hard look at the grounds.

At a school committee meeting last week, the facilities director, Max Kasper, revealed they found extensive glass contamination on the grass.

“This is a really frustrating and odd problem and we want professional help understanding what’s going on, ” Kasper explained.

The school district built Swampscott Elementary School in 2024. Shortly after, they noticed the field was not draining well and they invested in a drainage project, which took place in 2026.

During the work to improve the drains, glass that was buried below was disturbed and dug up. The field was immediately closed.

“We brought it to the surface with the drainage project, so its really … it’s always been there,” said Kasper.

School Committee Chair Glenn Paster said the child who was hurt by the glass suffered minor injuries and is expected to be okay.

Another parent, who wished to remain anonymous, provided a photo of a cut to her daughter’s leg. She said it happened in June during recess on that same field.

“Any injury that took place, it really wasn’t on anybody’s mind that it could even be glass until recently. So it’s not to say that kids didn’t get scratched or cut. People thought it was a rock or whatever,” Swampscott Superintendent Jason Calichman told school cmmittee members.

Now, the question is what to do next. The school project cost $100 million.

“We tried to do something good and really did something bad,” Kasper said, adding, “now we have a major, major issue.”

In a statement provided to NBC10 Boston, Paster wrote, “We are in the process of hiring a landscape architect to determine the best path forward. We are also determining what legal options we might have in order to mitigate the cost of the repairs that will be necessary.”
