Blood found in saw likely was Mamta Kafle's, forensics pro testifies

Blood found in a reciprocating saw is likely to be Mamta Kafle’s, a forensics professional testified Tuesday, as Kafle’s husband, Naresh Bhatt, stands accused of killing and dismembering her more than two years ago in Northern Virginia.

On the stand Tuesday, a forensic scientist testified about what analysis of DNA and blood samples showed. Some samples, including from inside of the saw, are very likely to be Kafle’s blood, she said.

But lab testing could not determine the source of other blood samples from the family’s home, finding that it could be from multiple contributors.

“The blood testing was positive, so blood was indicated, however no DNA typing results were obtained. That means I could not develop a DNA profile from either of these samples,” the scientist said.

Prosecutors said Bhatt bought the saw months before they say he killed Kafle. He gave it to a landscaper – who then gave it to police.

The trial initially set to last seven weeks might be a couple of days ahead of schedule. Prosecutors said they might finish presenting their case as early as Monday, meaning the defense could start presenting its case next week.
