JSO releases bodycam footage of fatal officer-involved shooting on Mar Vic Lane

The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office has released body camera footage and details of a fatal police shooting earlier this month in which officers say a 34-year-old woman fired at them before they returned fire.

According to JSO, on October 10th, JSO’s emergency communications center received a call reporting that a woman dressed in a purple jumpsuit was waving a gun in the air. When officers responded, the subject was not there. Another call came in an hour later, saying a woman wearing all purple pointed a gun at a man in the same area. Officers responded but still could not locate the woman.

JSO says the next day another call came in regarding a woman wearing a purple sweatsuit, pointing a gun at a man. Officers E. Cobian and J. Curtis responded to the scene and found 34-year-old Chau Duncan yelling and throwing things. Officers asked Duncan to stop, show her hands, and stop reaching into her bag. Duncan did not comply.

Officer Cobian drove slowly down the street toward Duncan while Officers Curtis and J. Boykin walked behind it. Duncan pulled her gun from her bag and pointed it at the officers, firing a round that struck the driver’s side door of the patrol car. Officers Curtis, Boykin, and B. Herrin simultaneously fired, striking Duncan.

JSO says Duncan fell to the ground, dropping the gun. Paramedics rendered emergency aid. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

If Duncan survived her injuries, JSO says she would have faced four counts of attempted murder of a law enforcement officer had she survived.

The State Attorney’s Office will independently review the incident to assess the legality of the officer’s actions. JSO will also conduct an internal review to ensure the officers acted within policy.
