MPD officers check on registered sex offenders ahead of Halloween
MEMPHIS, Tenn. (WMC) - Operation Bluff City Shield had more than 100 MPD officers visit the homes of registered sex offenders Wednesday morning to check if offenders are following compliance rules ahead of Halloween.
Officers worked down a list of offenders to confirm that addresses and other information are up to date before a night when children knock on the doors of strangers. The checks are part of MPD’s efforts this week to keep streets safe for children.
2nd Lt. Shaun Lynch of the Auto Theft Task Force said the process has been working for a while.
“It definitely sends the right message to the community and to the offenders that we are here, we’re out here making sure the kids are safe, making sure the community is safe, making sure those who are on the registry are in compliance,” Lynch said. “So I think it works.”
Lynch said residents can check online for registered sex offenders in their area. He said anyone who knows a registered sex offender is not following the rules should call law enforcement.
