G20 is coming to Doral. Here's how schools, traffic could be impacted
Schools in Doral will switch to virtual learning for two days in December as the city prepares for the G20 summit and the significant security measures expected to accompany the international gathering.
Students will attend classes remotely on Monday, Dec. 14, and Tuesday, Dec. 15, when the summit is scheduled to take place at Trump National Doral.
More than 30 countries are expected to be represented at the gathering, bringing high-ranking international officials to Doral and prompting an extensive security operation led by the U.S. Secret Service with assistance from other agencies. The list of participating countries includes Canada, China and Russia, with an invitation extended to Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Miami-Dade County School Board member Dan Espino said the decision to move classes online was made with safety and transportation concerns in mind.
“My concern is parents are not getting to schools, teachers not making it to school on time, and what happens if there is some kind of emergency,” Espino said. “I would not want to endure that as a parent.”
The impact on the city is expected to begin before the summit itself. Officials said roadblocks and other security measures will start going into place Dec. 10, potentially slowing traffic throughout Doral.
Local officials are also planning community workshops and town halls to help residents understand the expected street closures, detours and security checkpoints.
For families with children attending Doral schools, the most immediate change will be the two days of remote instruction as the city accommodates one of the world’s largest international gatherings.
