Democratic super PAC says it’s spending $2.1M more in Colorado’s 3rd Congressional District

A super PAC tied to Democratic leadership in the U.S. House said Wednesday that it will spend an additional $2.1 million on TV ads in Colorado’s 3rd Congressional District in the lead up to Election Day to try to dislodge Republican incumbent Jeff Hurd.

The eleventh-hour infusion, confirmed by House Majority PAC spokesperson CJ Warnke, comes after more than 1 million Colorado voters, or about a quarter of the state’s active registered electorate, have already cast their ballots for this year’s election. The new spending likely won’t be reported to the Federal Election Commission for a few days.

Before HMP, which is linked to House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, D-New York, began running TV and digital ads in the 3rd District this week there had essentially been no super PAC spending on behalf of Hurd’s Democratic challenger, former Aspen City Council member Dwayne Romero.

National Democrats summoned the cavalry to Colorado’s 3rd Congressional District. It hasn’t come.

The $2.1 million infusion, which is in addition to about $300,000 HMP had already committed to spending on TV ads in the district in the week before Election Day, will help blunt the more than $3 million Republican groups have already spent in the 3rd District to benefit Hurd.

Much of the GOP money has come from a pair of super PACs tied to President Donald Trump who have used their spending in the district primarily to attack Romero. Through Monday, the Trump-aligned Safety & Affordability and No Going Back PACs had spent a combined $2.5 million in the 3rd District.

Recent polling showed the race between Romero and Hurd, who is finishing up his first term, is essentially tied despite the GOP tilt of the district, which spans the Western Slope and stretches into Pueblo and southeastern Colorado.

Hurd beat his Democratic opponent in 2024 by 5 percentage points, while Trump won the district that year by 10 percentage points.
