Renter says landlord ‘owes like $20K’ for Cibolo utilities; City says there is a resolution after KSAT inquiry
Families living at Shady Meadows Mobile Home Park said they went without fully working water for more than 24 hours.
Julie Phillips said she called the landlord to let her know, and when the woman called back, she said it was the water company.
“She goes, ‘Bad news is I think the water company turned off the water,’” Phillips said. “She owes like $20,000 to the water company.”
The City of Cibolo did not confirm the amount owed to the city by Shady Meadows Mobile Home Park ownership.
Phillips said she pays her rent on time and that there are a lot of other people who pay their rent on time and expect the utilities they pay for.
“My husband called me because he’s at work and said that they’re talking about not turning the water back on,” Phillips said. “They’re going to get everybody’s rent for November and then they’re going to foreclose on the property.”
KSAT could not confirm any potential foreclosure after calling the number listed online for Shady Meadows Mobile Home Park in Cibolo multiple times. KSAT also called the two people currently and previously responsible for the property but did not hear back.
KSAT emailed the City of Cibolo multiple times with no response throughout the day until after showing up at the city’s utility office in person. Shortly after speaking with someone in the utility office, the assistant to the city manager replied via email.
“The City of Cibolo and the involved parties have come to a resolution regarding the water service issue at Shady Meadows Mobile Home Park (760 FM 78, Cibolo, TX 78108),” Nicole Perez, assistant to the city manager, wrote.
Perez also stated the water was turned on about an hour after KSAT’s third email to the city and prior to KSAT showing up to the office in-person.
Phillips told KSAT she pays $850 per month in rent and that people who live in the mobile home park have been hearing different possible outcomes of this situation, including a change of management.
One woman who lives on the property but did not want to be on camera said a City of Cibolo employee sent her a text about a management change.
“When (the landlord) paid the water bill, she told the utilities manager she is no longer responsible for the park,” the woman’s text from an alleged city employee reads.
Phillips said she has lived in the trailer park for 20 years and is glad the water is back on but hopes it doesn’t happen again.
“I hope it stays on so we don’t have to move anywhere else, because we don’t have nothing saved up or anything like that to get out of here,” Phillips said.
It is unclear who currently owns Shady Meadows Mobile Home Park, however, at last check on Oct. 28, the water was back on for people living in the mobile home park.
