Softball coach charged with voyeurism
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — An Albuquerque softball coach accused of watching a teenage girl through a window while she was changing is facing a new request from prosecutors to bar him from having contact with any children while his case is pending.
Matt Martinez is currently out of jail under conditions that require him to stay away from the alleged victim. Prosecutors are now asking a judge to re-evaluate those conditions and prohibit him from being around all children, citing his work coaching and recruiting girls softball players and his previous employment as a substitute teacher.
The case stems from an incident last Wednesday in northeast Albuquerque.
According to police, a woman called 911 in distress after her 17-year-old daughter reported seeing a man looking through a window while she was getting ready for school. Investigators said the girl was changing clothes when she made eye contact with Martinez.
Police alleged Martinez was standing on a ledge that allowed him to see through a small window and that he jumped down after being spotted.
Investigators said a neighbor recognized Martinez from a school where he previously worked as a substitute teacher. According to police, the neighbor told investigators she greeted Martinez earlier that morning and that he claimed he was looking for his missing white dog.
Martinez later gave police a similar explanation, according to court records. However, officers said Martinez told them he was searching for his missing black dog.
Police also spoke with Martinez’s wife, who lives near the alleged victim, according to investigators. While the couple is separated, police said Martinez reportedly still has access to the home.
Investigators said Martinez’s wife confirmed she owns two dogs, one black and one white, but told officers she was not aware whether either dog had gotten loose. She wasn’t home that morning.
Martinez is charged with felony voyeurism and is expected to appear before a judge again, where prosecutors are expected to seek stricter release conditions.
