was killed in a motorcycle crash

A veteran Miami Beach Police officer has died after a motorcycle crash in northwest Miami-Dade on Tuesday morning, officials said.

The crash happened shortly before 11:30 a.m. in the area of the Gratigny Parkway and the Interstate 75 Extension near the Palmetto Expressway.

Miami Beach Police officials confirmed the motorman was hospitalized in critical condition before dying from his injuries.

At a news conference Tuesday afternoon, Miami Beach Police Chief Wayne Jones identified the motorman as 33-year-old David Cajuso.

Cajuso, a 10-year veteran of the department, leaves behind a wife and three young children, ages 2, 3, and 5, Jones said.

"This is a sad and dark day for the men and women of the Miami Beach Police Department," Jones said. "I ask that you keep his young family in your thoughts and prayers as they navigate this grievous process."

Cajuso previously worked for Hollywood Police and comes from a first responder family, with his father a firefighter for Miami Beach Fire Rescue.

At the crash scene, aerial footage from Chopper 6 showed a large gathering of first responders and officers in a grassy area off the roadway where the motorcycle could be seen on its side.

The officer was seen being placed on Miami-Dade Fire Rescue helicopter to be taken to Jackson Memorial Hospital's Ryder Trauma Center.

Hundreds of officers from multiple agencies gathered at the hospital to pay their respects as many were seen consoling each other.

"I am humbled by all the officers who came here from other organizations to show their support to David and his family and the Miami Beach Police Department," Jones said.

Cajuso had been involved in a 2017 incident in which he was run over by a woman in a BMW who was then shot and killed by police.

The Florida Highway Patrol is leading the investigation into the crash, and officials said only the motorcycle was involved.

No other details were immediately known.
