THOMASVILLE, N.C. (WBTV) - A high school in North Carolina canceled the rest of its varsity soccer season after a racist video recently went viral on social media.
East Davidson High School confirmed on Wednesday, Oct. 28, that the decision to cancel the season came after “thorough investigation and careful consideration.”
The video -- which has since made the rounds on social media -- showed the soccer team on a bus.
In the clip, a person said to “make noise if you hate [racial slur].” Many people on the bus then made sounds.
“The behavior depicted in the social media post is unacceptable and does not reflect the standards we uphold at East Davidson High School,” the school said in a statement. “We recognize the impact this decision has on our student-athletes and appreciate our school community’s understanding as we address this matter.”
The school said the soccer season’s cancellation “reflects the seriousness of the situation and our commitment to upholding the standards of conduct and accountability expected of all students.”
In a separate statement, the East Davidson principal said school leaders “strongly condemn the behavior.”
East Davidson’s soccer team posted a 17-4 record, including a forfeit on Monday, Oct. 26, after the video surfaced. The Oct. 26 match was the school’s final regular-season game of the year.
The 3A state varsity soccer playoffs are scheduled to begin on Nov. 2.
East Davidson High School is in Thomasville, about 30 minutes south of Winston-Salem and Greensboro.
