Celtics announce ‘unprecedented' $200 million donation to Boston Children's Hospital
The Boston Celtics have made a historic, $200 million donation to Boston Children’s Hospital, the team and the hospital announced Thursday morning.
The gift comes from the Celtics ownership group and the team, in association with the Boston Celtics Shamrock Foundation.
Boston Children’s Hospital said the gift will have a “sweeping impact,” allowing them to build a pediatric mental health facility and foster earlier intervention for children in crisis, fund research into emerging therapies for childhood diseases, support advanced training for pediatric nurses, create an innovation fund to support concepts that can transform children’s health and expand family-centered programs fostering healthy lifestyles in local communities.
“While the size of this gift is unprecedented for Boston Children’s Hospital, its significance will ultimately be measured not by the record it sets, but by the lives it will save,” said Dr. Kevin Churchwell, CEO of Boston Children’s Hospital.
“Families come to us in their most challenging moments, looking for answers for their kids,” he added. “This extraordinary generosity from the Boston Celtics will help us accelerate our work to serve children on an unprecedented scale. Together, we share an unwavering commitment to winning on behalf of children and families everywhere, and to building a future focused on what’s next.”
“The Celtics have historically been defined by the concept that true legacy is more than what happens on the court,” said Bill Chisholm, Celtics chairman and governor. “Boston Children’s and the Celtics share a belief that it takes every single one of us to achieve our most ambitious goals. This gift is our commitment to the next generation in Boston and far beyond. We all win when we invest in our children’s futures.”
“I’ve had the privilege of seeing firsthand the extraordinary work being done at Boston Children’s Hospital and the difference it makes for patients and families,” said Rob Hale, Celtics co-owner. “Through this gift, the Celtics and Boston Children’s Hospital can help advance groundbreaking research, expand access to exceptional care, and create opportunities to improve the lives of children for years to come.”
The Celtics said they will celebrate Boston Children’s Hospital on Friday night during their game against the Chicago Bulls at TD Garden, with in-game moments throughout the night recognizing current and former patients, families, staff and others with ties to the hospital.
