Today at 10:30 a.m., haunts, hiring and Halloween treats around the city.
13TH FLOOR HAUNTED HOUSE
Scream season opened with the crew walking straight into the 13th Floor, and the audio tells you how that went: screaming, one host fleeing to the bathroom, and a pig covered in blood somewhere in the dark. The haunt has been operating for more than 10 years, and a member of the team explained that this year’s build leans harder on the rooms themselves. More scenes move, more scenes interact with guests, so the scare isn’t coming only from the actors. The designers said they plan each season around the same question: how to make a giant playground where people get scared and get to do the scaring too.
GRAZE AND WINE HALLOWEEN SPREAD
Graze and Wine brought in a Halloween grazing table that was equal parts charcuterie and set design: witch hats, little brooms, a skeleton board nodding to Practical Magic, a frog, spinach dip, and grapes standing in for intestines spilling out of the skeleton. The owner also laid out a warm basil pesto pasta, pointing out that the business feeds people as well as boards them. Cauldrons were filled with pickles and olives, spiders scattered through the details, and the guiding principle was simple: more is better. Orders range from small gatherings and teacher gifts to full events, and the company takes requests through its social media pages or by phone. Find it as Graze and Wine TX.
Also shared on camera: a lease is signed for a bar called Dose by Graze and Wine, which the owner hopes to open by the end of the year.
BEXAR COUNTY SHERIFF’S OFFICE HIRING EVENT
This segment was sponsored by the Bexar County Sheriff’s Office, and the sheriff walked through the next law enforcement testing event. Testing happens at the TriPoint YMCA at 9 a.m. and 4 p.m., with sessions open to anyone who shows up, though the recruiting office prefers a call ahead at 210-335-JOBS for a head count. Come in gym clothes: the physical agility test follows immediately after the written exam, which is a general aptitude test covering some science, physics and light math rather than anything law enforcement specific.
This particular test is geared toward the department’s straight to the streets patrol program, meaning recruits go through the patrol academy and graduate as patrol deputies without working in the jail first. Detention deputy positions are also open. Pay starts at $61,500 plus overtime, with a pension and insurance attached, and candidates must be 21 by the time they finish the academy. Certified peace officers coming from other agencies can qualify for an abbreviated academy. Details are at bcsocareer.com.
LUCY’S CAKE SHOP GHOST CUPCAKES
Lucy’s Cake Shop, the family owned San Antonio bakery that has been making cakes for more than 50 years, turned the counter into a cupcake decorating station. The method: a big round tip squeezed hard into the center of the cupcake, a second smaller squeeze on top for the head, a Reese’s Pieces basket tucked in, a dot of icing as edible glue for a sugar pumpkin, then a piped arm and two eyes. One host’s ghost came out, by her own description, a blob, which made the point about how much skill these designs actually take.
The owner traced the shop from its start in a garage through three expansions, and talked about how much the work has changed. Designs that once meant tracing from a coloring book, cutting the shape and filling it in by hand now come off a computer and printer. Wedding cake tastes have shifted too, away from stacked tiers and heavy swags and string work toward something smaller and simpler. The recipes are still her mother’s. Orders and more information are at salive.com under the As Seen on SA Live tab, and the shop’s social media pages show the cake work.
EL MIRASOL HALLOWEEN MENU
El Mirasol Una Cocina Mexicana took viewers through a Halloween drink lineup at its Napa Oaks location, 27650 I-10 Ste 115 in Boerne. Two chispas anchor it: the Witches Brew, the classic chispa recipe with green apple liqueur, and the Midnight, the same base with raspberry puree and a black obsidian salt rim. A pumpkin spice cadillac margarita gets Licor 43 lit on fire to pull the flavors forward, plus spiced pumpkin cream rum. There is an espresso martini built on fresh in-house coffee, Kahlua, vodka and spiced pumpkin rum, and a Vampiro as well.
The food side got attention too: a new lump crab salad with smoked salmon, caviar and avocado, a guacamole ribeye with house-made guacamole, and queso flameado the restaurant describes as having an insane cheese pull. The Halloween drinks run through the end of October. The restaurant is family owned with three locations, and posts updates as El Mirasol SA on social media.
