Commentary: Editor’s note: I’m retiring, April’s going to take over

Early in October I informed the Nevada Current staff and States Newsroom, our parent nonprofit, that I’m retiring, and Friday, Nov. 20, will be my last day with the Current.

States Newsroom sensibly did the obvious thing and quickly asked April Corbin Girnus, the Current’s deputy editor, to accept the job as editor. To everyone’s delight, April said yes.

When we first started working with each other in the late spring of 2018, I had no way of knowing that all five members of the original team would still be together more than eight years later.

(Nor did I imagine I would end up editing the Current longer than I held any other job over the course of my sometimes bumpy but mostly pretty lucky career.)

All of us — senior reporter Dana Gentry, reporters Michael Lyle and Jeniffer Solis, April, and myself — each in our own way but also in collaboration with each other have made the Current a unique and indispensable space on the Nevada media landscape.

I’m proud to have been a part of it.

And I’m excited to see what April does with the joint.
