Legendary college football coach June Jones dies at 73

HONOLULU (KHNL/Gray News) - Former University of Hawaii head football coach June Jones has died at the age of 73, according to multiple sources Thursday.

June Jones was the winningest coach in the modern era of Hawaii football with 76 victories in nine seasons from 1999 through 2007. He went to work at Southern Methodist University from 2008 until he resigned in 2014.

Jones led Hawaii to six bowl games and coached three seasons with 10 or more wins, including an undefeated 12-0 regular season and a trip to the Allstate Sugar Bowl in 2007.

His 1999 squad recorded the biggest turnaround in NCAA history with a 9-4 record and a share of the Western Athletic Conference title and earned him National Coach of the Year honors.

Jones’ teams captured two WAC titles, in 1999 and 2007, and his run-and-shoot offense produced record-breaking quarterbacks, most notably Heisman Trophy finalist Colt Brennan.

Jones coached five All-Americans, 52 all-conference performers and 16 NFL draft picks. He also started his coaching career at Hawaii as a graduate assistant in 1983 and played quarterback for the university from 1973-74.

Jones agreed to become the next offensive coordinator at Kapolei High School in 2016. He was most recently the offensive coordinator of the Seattle Sea Dragons.

Additionally, Jones coached for three years in the NFL.
