Suspect arrested in Texas for deadly shooting at Albuquerque storage facility
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — A suspect in a deadly shooting last Thursday in southeast Albuquerque is in custody after authorities in Texas tracked him down.
Epifanio Torres III is in jail for a shooting that left Mark Staake dead at a storage facility along Central Avenue, just east of Louisiana Boulevard. Witnesses reported seeing a man, allegedly with a gun, drive away in a gold Honda Pilot.
The shooting happened Oct. 22, sometime before 10:40 a.m. Around 12 hours later, sheriff’s deputies in Ward County, Texas, say they found the Honda with Torres at the wheel.
Texas Rangers searched the vehicle and found blood evidence, a rifle wrapped in a towel, “a fully loaded magazine” and “spent shell casings” police say matched the caliber found at the scene of the shooting.
Homicide detectives identified Torres as the suspect. Surveillance video allegedly captured him with Staake on Oct. 21 – purchasing archery equipment and driving the victim’s gold Honda near the time of the shooting.
Torres faces charges of murder, armed robber, tampering with evidence and possession of a firearm by a felon. He will face extradition back to New Mexico.
