Boston singles are ditching the apps in their quest for love

Love may be blind, but is Boston’s dating scene hopeless?

With the hit Netflix dating show “Love Is Blind” shining the spotlight on local singles, some are saying goodbye to dating apps and hello to some unconventional ways of finding love.

Even Morrey Eglin, one of the breakout stars of the Boston season of “Love Is Blind” said he’d rather meet someone the old-fashioned way.

“I’m a really social guy. I bounce at Lincoln, I’m in the scene, but it wasn’t working, so that’s why I went on ‘Love Is Blind.'”

Eglin didn’t leave the pods with a fiancée, so he’s still looking.

“You know the Ben Affleck meme where he’s smoking a cigarette, holding a Dunkin’? I felt like that by the end of it. I was pretty emotionally drained.”

Eglin said he’s putting dating on hold for now, but he’s not interested in swiping his way to a soulmate.

“I never wanted my love story to start on an app,” he said. “I want to bump into somebody in an airport, like, I drop all my papers.”

And he’s not alone.

Julz Radly is the founder of Stoop Dating, a Boston-based social media dating show where she matches up singles for blind dates.

“If people are willing to go on a date on a stoop on camera, that’s how you know dating is so bad nowadays,” she said. “I think everyone just wants that human connection that the apps are lacking.”

Radly said she’s received thousands of applications from people who want to be set up.

“I think the apps have just made people so disposable and it’s easy to write someone off based on appearances, whereas with Stoop Dating, I matchmake you, you don’t know who you’re meeting. It’s just a fun conversation to get to know someone.”

Some are taking their search offline entirely. Bored of Dating Apps hosts in-person events designed to bring back the “meet cute,” and they’re just about to launch in Boston.

“We like it when humans human and chat and flirt with each other. We don’t need an algorithm, sometimes all you need is eye contact,” Jessica Evans of Bored of Dating Apps said.

The first Bored of Dating Apps event here in Boston is in November, and there are still tickets available.

Stoop Dating also hosts events for people who want to keep their dating lives off camera, and there are plans to expand the dating show to every neighborhood in Boston.
