A look at the new park at a former mine site in Henderson

There is a new park in east Henderson within a neighborhood being developed at a former mine site.

Greenbow Park is near Lake Mead and Lake Las Vegas parkways in the Aries master-planned community, which is being developed on the site of the former Three Kids Mine. The mine produced manganese for the U.S. government from 1917 to 1961, according to state officials.

The park features views of the Strip and includes a large field, playgrounds, a shaded picnic area, four pickleball courts and a paved trail that loops. City officials attended a grand opening for the Aries community at the park on Sept. 10.

The park is one of several planned for Aries, which spans more than 1,100 acres, homebuilder PulteGroup previously said. Other parks will feature sand volleyball courts, splash pads, play areas and barbecue pits.

City records show plans for more than 3,000 homes in an around the former mine site. The redevelopment project area spans 1,146 acres, but 410 acres made up the “impacted area” of the former mine, according to the Nevada Division of Environmental Protection, which oversees the project’s environmental cleanup.

The division previously put cleanup costs at about $257 million. Contaminants found at the site included arsenic, lead, petroleum hydrocarbons, dioxins and asbestos. Developers fronted the cost to clean up the site, the Las Vegas Review-Journal reported previously, but will be eligible to receive 85 percent of tax revenue generated during the first 25 years of the project and 80 percent from years 26 to 45.

The division also previously stated that manganese was stored at the former mining site until 2003. During the mine’s operation, manganese ore was mainly used in the building of ships and tanks during both world wars.

Anthony Molloy, Henderson’s director of redevelopment, economic development and tourism, told the Review-Journal in June that all remediation work had been completed. Molloy said there was no environmental contamination anywhere on the former mining site.

Pulte Homes, a PulteGroup brand, is selling houses in Aries. PulteGroup-owned Del Webb, which develops 55-and-over communities, is expected to begin selling homes there in 2027. Prices range from $300,000 to $500,000, according to the company’s September news release.
