Evacuees in Socorro County frustrated with slow recovery
SOCORRO, N.M. – Floodwaters in Socorro County have damaged homes, killed livestock and kept people out of their houses as water levels remain high.
Flooding in the San Francisco area on Monday prompted boat rescues for people stranded in their homes and unable to leave because of rising water.
Two boat teams made rescues there, but floodwaters killed one woman. People upstream from Socorro in the San Francisco area remain out of their homes.
State lawmakers set up a community meeting on Thursday for people affected by the recent flooding and by flooding that dates back more than a month.
“They’ve lost their homes, they’ve lost livestock, pets, and their entire crops,” state Rep. Rebecca Dow, R-N.M., said.
“We’re as frustrated as our constituents, we’re just here today,” state Sen. Joshua Sanchez said. “We’re going to have a meeting to see with the federal agencies and state agencies to see when we can get these dollars roling into these communities to our constituents, they’re not able to get back into their houses, they’re not able to get their possessions,” Sanchez said.
Last week, Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham sent President Trump a disaster declaration request over recent flooding in southern New Mexico. The governor’s office said it has not heard back.
