PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) -- The historic Wanamaker building in Center City Philadelphia is being reimagined.
The city's Zoning Board of Adjustment gave approval for the building at 13th and Market Streets to have more dining options inside the landmark property.
"We could anticipate sit-down restaurants, takeout restaurants, specialty prepared food shops, among other permitted uses," said zoning attorney Adam Laver on Wednesday. "What's really unique about the property is the vastness of this building."
While no tenants have been finalized, developers envision turning portions of the building into a dining destination centered around the iconic Eagle statue in the Grand Court.

The lower levels of the building were previously occupied by Macy's, which closed last year.
Developers hope the new mix of restaurants and retail offerings will attract visitors back to the property, while upper floors of the 12-story building would be converted for residential use.
Previous redevelopment proposals have included apartments and a rooftop pool.
With zoning approval now in place, developers can move forward with the next stages of planning.
Completed in 1911, the Wanamaker Building became Philadelphia's first department store and remains one of the city's most recognizable landmarks.

It's listed on the Philadelphia Register of Historic Places, which means that any changes to the Wanamaker Grand Court, including the organ and eagle statue, require a building permit and approval from the Philadelphia Historical Commission.
