‘Ridiculous’: Northside ISD parents react to dangerous intersection after student gets hit by car
Boldt Elementary School parents are looking for better safety measures at an intersection students cross after a student was hit on the way to school.
On Oct. 20, a 10-year-old student was hit while crossing the street at Hollimon Parkway and Reeves Loop. His mother and other Northside ISD parents of students at Boldt Elementary say safety measures need to be improved.
“The kids almost get hit, they really do almost get hit all the time,” one parent said. The parent told KSAT she walks to pick her kids up from school even though they live right across the street because of how dangerous the intersection is.
Jennifer Phillips said her kids walk in the area too, and in the last week she has seen how dangerous the intersection can be.
“Just last week a child got hit,” Phillips said. “This morning there was a near miss and even last week the ambulance had to come out.”
Nadia White’s son is who got hit by a car in mid-October.
“He said he was stopped,” White said. “The woman said she was stopped, and they both went at the same time.”
White says her son is OK but says she now walks him to school and he has anxiety near intersections.
Parents said they hope safety measures at the intersection are improved soon before the intersection leads to a more serious injury or worse.
In the meantime, many parents rely on a good neighbor, Anthony Curtis. Curtis voluntarily goes to the intersection before school begins in the morning and acts as a crossing guard, using equipment he has purchased himself, including a vest and stop signs.
One parent said Curtis even wears a costume sometimes since it is Halloween time, yet still, cars nearly hit him.
“It’s bad,” Curtis said. “I mean, the number of times that I’ve had to dodge people doing that is kind of ridiculous.”
All of the parents know of Curtis and many of them have come to love and appreciate what he does each day to keep their kids safe.
“He actually tried to hold us for cars not to hit us, but they don’t care,” Cynthia, a Boldt Elementary parent, said.
“He doesn’t get paid and it shouldn’t be all on him to make sure the kids are safe,” White said.
“He is usually the reason why some of these children do not get hit,” Phillips said.
These parents want Bexar County or the local homeowners association to add lights, stoplights or a flashing crosswalk sign.
“I just wish they would put lights or something there,” White said.
Northside ISD emailed a statement reading in part, “We recognize no neighborhood is completely risk-free … It’s essential that drivers and walkers both keep their attention on the road.”
Bexar County Public Works is looking into the intersection since Hollimon Parkway and Reeves Loop is not the school district’s property.
