VIDEO: 27-year-old arrested after shooting near Roy, pursuit ends in Yelm field
A 49-year-old man is in stable condition after being shot multiple times near Roy.
A 27-year-old suspect is in custody following a pursuit that ended in a field in Yelm, according to the Pierce County Sheriff’s Office.
Deputies responded at about 1:54 p.m. Wednesday to reports of a shooting in the 35600 block of 16th Avenue Court South. They found the victim with multiple gunshot wounds and provided life-saving medical aid before fire personnel took him to a hospital.
“The suspect fled before deputies arrived. Yelm police later located his vehicle in a Safeway parking lot and attempted to contact him,” Pierce County Deputy Carly Cappetto said. “He fled, leading officers on a short pursuit along Yelm Avenue West. The pursuit ended when the suspect drove into a field, and his vehicle became disabled. He surrendered after officers conducted a felony traffic stop.”
Yelm police arrested the suspect in the 14300 block of 93rd Avenue Southeast. Capetto said a firearm believed to have been used in the shooting was thrown from the vehicle during the pursuit and later recovered for processing.
The suspect was booked into the Pierce County Jail and faces charges of first-degree assault and drive-by shooting. Authorities say the men knew each other and no other suspects are being sought. Investigators have not established what led to the shooting.
“We do feel that he was a danger to the community,” Capetto said.
She also praised the coordination among the sheriff’s office, Yelm police, and Thurston County Sheriff’s Office, saying, “This was excellent work as always between multiple agencies.”
