Utah woman gets $5,492 refund almost 1 year after construction job never began

WEST VALLEY CITY — A West Valley City woman has received her $5,492 refund after paying EcoView Windows and Doors for a home renovation job the company never began.

Marsha Worthen had waited through months of delays and a promised refund before contacting Get Gephardt to investigate.

Worthen had a reason to trust EcoView. The company replaced her windows a few years ago. So, she hired it again to install three doors, paying a $5,492 deposit in November 2025.

"I haven't received the doors," Worthen said in August of 2026.

What she received instead was delays, excuses, apologies and eventually, as text messages show, a promised refund.

Worthen eventually hired another company to put in her doors. But almost a year later, she still didn't have her money back from the job EcoView never even began.

Contractor license had expired

When Get Gephardt began investigating EcoView Windows and Doors, we learned the company had been licensed in Utah. But that license expired last November, just days after Worthen paid for her doors.

Through a public records request, Get Gephardt also confirmed that no action had been taken against the company by the Utah Department of Commerce.

Get Gephardt reached out to the local business owner. He declined an on-camera interview but answered by text message.

He denied wrongdoing and pointed the finger at some employees for the company's troubles. He said he was forced to shut down and was "filing for bankruptcy."

He texted that Worthen wasn't the only customer waiting, writing that he'd been working "to get right with the 32 customers that have been waiting."

As for Worthen, EcoView's owner stated he was "selling [his] house and will repay her with the proceeds."

It took about two months, but true to his word, Worthen has now been reimbursed for the doors she never got.

What Utah homeowners can learn from a contractor closing

Hiring a licensed contractor is important. But a license is no money-back guarantee, especially when the business folds.

Worthen's experience is a reminder that even though hiring a licensed contractor comes with some protections, those protections have their limits. One of those limits: a company shutting down without warning.

The state urges homeowners to tie payments to progress rather than handing over a large deposit.
