KOREATOWN, LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- Los Angeles city officials are proposing a pause on new karaoke establishments in Koreatown as the neighborhood continues to grow, according to a statement from the office of City Councilwoman Heather Hutt.
"Koreatown is an internationally known culinary and entertainment destination that includes a vibrant, diverse population in the densest neighborhood in the City," Hutt's office said in the statement.
According to the Los Angeles Police Department's Olympic Division, the neighborhood has more than 500 Alcoholic Beverage Control applications currently on file within Koreatown. Hutt's office said the proposed measure is intended to be temporary.
"Our motion to pause new karaoke establishments is just that, a pause," the statement said. "As more and more housing is built in Koreatown, we field calls from constituents who deal with late night noise, traffic, and its related issues. We have seen the entertainment and nightlife grow in the area and want to ensure this growth is more thoughtful and creates a safe environment for everyone."
The statement said the pause would provide time to educate prospective and existing karaoke operators about their responsibilities and how to navigate the permitting and construction process.
Hutt's office also pointed to occasions in which business owners completed construction work before obtaining all required approvals.
"The City has had instances where a business owner built out an establishment with building permits prior to receiving all the appropriate conditional use, alcohol, and live entertainment permits that are required," the statement said. "That can be quite expensive for the owner if the City denies the permits, and this is another issue we want to address."
The office said the proposed pause is intended to address community concerns while helping business owners better understand the city's permitting requirements before opening new karaoke venues.
