Moore spent 15 years volunteering and serving on the advisory committee for the nonprofit, which supports families with young children who are experiencing homelessness or housing instability.
Tyese Lawyer, president and CEO of Our House, said Moore used her resources and connections to raise awareness about the challenges facing the families the organization serves and help provide support through its programs.
One of those families is 29-year-old Melanie Martin and her three sons, who have been staying at Our House since August. Martin said she is grateful her family had somewhere to turn instead of living in her car.
“Jovita Moore has meant so much to our house over the years,” said Martin. “Her spirit her warmth, her true desire to impact community in a positive way is a legacy that lasts on here at Our House.”
Our House, located in northeast Atlanta, provides families with necessities such as diapers, wipes and formula, along with housing, workforce development, childcare, early childhood education and health care.
Martin said having a safe and secure place to stay, including a private room for her family, has been important as she works toward getting her own place again.
Lawyer said Moore’s warmth and desire to make a positive impact on the community remain part of her legacy at Our House.
The organization also honors Moore through its Jovita Moore Dining Hall, where families gather for meals.
