Woman killed, child critically injured in Hawthorne

HAWTHORNE, Calif. (KABC) -- A woman was killed and a child was critically injured Thursday in Hawthorne, prompting an investigation.

Homicide detectives responded around 3:20 p.m. to the 4000 block of 139th Street, near Jim Thorpe Park and Prairie Avenue, to assist the Hawthorne Police Department with a death investigation, according to the Sheriff's Information Bureau.

Authorities appeared to focus their investigation on an apartment complex in the area.

The woman was pronounced dead at a hospital, while the child was listed in critical condition.

Authorities did not release additional information.
