Live updates: Mental health expert to testify in Matthew Farwell trial
What to Know
- Ex-Stoughton cop Matthew Farwell is accused of strangling Sandra Birchmore at her Canton apartment in early 2021 after she told him that she was pregnant and that he was the father. DNA evidence later showed that he was not the father of the unborn child.
- Farwell, who was a police Explorers volunteer, allegedly used his authority and access to groom, sexually exploit and then sexually abuse Birchmore when she was 15. He continued to have sex with her when she became an adult.
- Friday is expected to be a half day of testimony, and it’s looking like the defense could rest its case next week.
Sandra Birchmore‘s former boyfriend was among those who testified for the defense Thursday in the trial of Matthew Farwell, the ex-Stoughton cop accused of killing a pregnant Birchmore in 2021 and staging her death as a suicide. Dr. Melissa Piasecki, a mental health expert, is expected to take the stand on Friday, which the judge has said will be a half-day.
Opening statements were held three weeks ago. The case has drawn national attention and is the latest Massachusetts criminal case in the spotlight after the recent trials of Lindsay Clancy and Karen Read. The defense said they have about a week’s worth of witnesses, so closing arguments could happen next week.
