Driver indicted for killing mother, 2 sons in fiery crash
MEMPHIS, Tenn. (WMC) - A grand jury has indicted the driver accused of causing a deadly chain-reaction crash on Interstate 40 in May that claimed the lives of a mother and her two sons.
Robert Carmack, 26, has been indicted on the following charges:
- Three counts of Vehicular Homicide - Reckless
- One count of Aggravated Assault - Reckless
- Two counts of Reckless Endangerment - Deadly Weapon
The crash happened around 3:15 p.m. on May 31 near I-40 and Hollywood Avenue.
According to Memphis police, Carmack was speeding westbound in a Ford truck when he passed a flashing TDOT construction sign roughly 25 yards before slamming into slowing traffic.
Carmack rear-ended a car carrying Tonya Cannady and her two sons, Barry and Scott. The impact triggered a multi-vehicle pileup, pushing Cannady’s car into another, causing a full-collision with a tractor-trailer.
Carmack’s truck dragged the victims’ vehicle for at least 50 yards, causing it to burst into flames.
Cannady and both of her sons were pronounced dead at the scene.
The driver of another vehicle involved was also taken to St. Francis Hospital-Bartlett in non-critical condition.
