CHARLOTTE, N.C. (WBTV) - The Carolina Panthers have made a major coaching staff change after their latest loss.
Following Carolina’s 27-19 to the Green Bay Packers on Thursday Night Football, the Panthers fired defensive coordinator Ejiro Evero.
Evero was in his fourth season with the Panthers. He was initially brought in on Frank Reich’s staff but stuck around when Canales took the head-coaching job in 2024.
Across his four years in Carolina, Evero’s defense ranked 29th, 32nd, 15th and 27th in points allowed per game. His 2024 unit gave up the most points in a single season in NFL history.
In addition to Evero, the Panthers also fired defensive passing game coordinator Jonathan Cooley.
Defensive line coach Todd Wash was named interim defensive coordinator and will call the defense’s plays.

Wash was the Jacksonville Jaguars’ defensive coordinator from 2016-2020. He made the Jaguars a top-four defensive unit twice during those five years.
Carolina has a “mini-bye” with 10 days between their Week 8 loss to Green Bay and their next game in Week 9.
The banged-up Panthers will hope to get some players back before the Week 9 matchup with the Denver Broncos. Carolina will host Denver in Charlotte on Nov. 8.
