Sound Transit launches pilot program allowing pets on light rail and buses

Sound Transit has launched a limited-duration pet policy pilot program allowing pets aboard transit services under updated guidelines.

The pilot applies to Link light rail, Sounder trains, and ST Express buses.

Sound Transit said the pilot program aims to gather operational, safety, and accessibility data alongside employee feedback to help them develop a permanent pet policy. The agency will measure the program’s performance using operational metrics.

Under the updated rules, dogs may travel either in a carrier or on a short leash, while cats and other small pets must be transported in secure carriers. Riders are required to maintain control of their pets, clean up any messes, and ensure animals do not occupy seats or block aisles and doorways. Aggressive animals are prohibited at all times.

Rules for service animals remain unchanged in accordance with Americans with Disabilities Act requirements.

Sound Transit will monitor facility conditions, maintenance logs, and security reports to track how the guidelines function during daily transit operations. Passengers needing to report active onboard issues can contact Sound Transit Security by phone or text at (206) 398-5268.

Detailed guidelines and updates are available here.

The pilot program is scheduled to run through Spring 2027.
