Elephant Raja has arrived at his new home in Cincinnati

ST. LOUIS, Mo. (First Alert 4) - The Saint Louis Zoo announced Friday morning that Raja the elephant arrived at his new home Thursday afternoon at the Cincinnati Zoo & Botanical Garden.

Raja, who is 33, was born in St. Louis and had three daughters and one grandson in his time at the zoo. This move was a part of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums Asian Elephant Species Survival Plan.

In an announcement from the Cincinnati Zoo & Botanical Garden, the zoo shared that it is bringing Raja in to mate with female elephants Yasmin and Anak. The Cincinnati Zoo & Botanical Garden said, “Yasmin and Anak’s genetics are underrepresented in this population, and it’s important for them to be in a successful breeding situation.” The zoo shared that the bull elephant they’ve been with for two years has shown “almost no interest” in the two female elephants.
