Georgia school shooting plot: Superintendent says school floor plans weren’t accessed

The Cherokee County Schools District superintendent sent a message to parents after warrants were released in a school shooting plot thwarted by police.

In her message, Superintendent Mary Elizabeth clarified that floor plans were not accessed.

Canton police said they arrested Shane Keith Taylor, 17, Michael Brandon Terry, 21 and a juvenile girl for organizing a plan to shoot up Cherokee High School. The juvenile is a former student.

The warrants say the young men conspired with the girl to provide weapons, and had planned outfits and discussed buying body armor, video cameras and combat boots.

The warrants also accused the suspects of “acquiring a floor plan of Cherokee High School.” The suspects are charged with conspiracy to commit murder.

The superintendent said the details in the warrants “once again hit far too close to home,” but she followed up with Canton Police Department about the floor plan.

She said police confirmed to her that the suspects had “publicly available images” of the school, not the actual floor plans.

“The school’s floor plans which are protected documents in the State of Georgia have not been — and never were — accessed,” Elizabeth said.

The superintendent added that the school board only talked about school safety and security at its meeting on Thursday night.

“The Cherokee County School Board takes their responsibility of safety, security, and confidential school information incredibly seriously and they have been attentive to the weight of this unsettling news,” Elizabeth said.
