Man charged with murder after argument leads to deadly shooting in Whitehaven
MEMPHIS, Tenn. (WMC) -A 20-year-old man is charged with second-degree murder after a deadly shooting Thursday night in Whitehaven, according to Memphis police.
Officers responded just after 8 p.m. on Oct. 29 to a shooting call at the Graceland Pointe Apartments. When they arrived, they found a man lying in a grassy area with gunshot wounds to his upper right leg and chest.
Before being rushed to the hospital, the victim told officers, “Lil D shot me,” and pointed toward a nearby apartment unit, an affidavit states. The victim was pronounced dead shortly before 9 p.m.
Officers went to the unit and detained 20-year-old Darren Hurt, also known as “Lil D,” along with his mother, Natasha Hurt.
Investigators said Natasha Hurt admitted to hiding a handgun in a clothes hamper after seeing her son outside pointing the weapon at the victim.
According to police, Darren Hurt confessed to the shooting. He told investigators the victim came to his door and started an argument after Hurt refused to hand over his gun. Hurt said the victim punched him in the nose and ran down the stairs. Hurt then grabbed the handgun, chased the victim outside, and fired.
Darren Hurt was booked into the Shelby County Jail and is charged with second-degree murder and employing a firearm during the commission of a dangerous felony.
