New study reveals 43% drop in childhood peanut allergies over last decade

(Aging Untold) — Recent research suggests that the long-held medical advice to avoid peanut products for young children may have been exactly the wrong approach. New studies indicate that introducing peanut products to infants between 4 and 6 months old can significantly reduce the risk of developing a peanut allergy.

According to a study released in October 2025, peanut allergy rates in children under 3 have dropped by roughly 43% over the last decade.

Dr. David Hill, lead author of the study, believes the reversal in guidance is a major factor in this decline.

“It’s safe to say in all likelihood, there are tens of thousands of kids today that don’t have food allergy that may have if we hadn’t made these recommendations about early allergen introduction,” Dr. Hill said.

For many families, the change in medical guidance has been transformative.

Kristie Herring, whose son Parker suffered from a severe peanut allergy, said the diagnosis was a “total surprise” given their family history.

Parker has been undergoing oral immunotherapy, a treatment involving slowly increasing doses of peanut protein, which has allowed him to safely consume peanut butter again.

However, experts caution that oral immunotherapy is not without risks and that early introduction is not a guaranteed cure for everyone. Food allergy remains a complex condition with multiple causes.

The American Academy of Pediatrics now recommends early introduction of peanut products for all infants without a history of prior reaction, provided they are already eating other solid foods. Pediatricians advise starting small and feeding peanut foods regularly—at least twice a week—through the first year and beyond. Importantly, whole peanuts should never be given to infants due to the significant risk of choking.

For those whose children have already developed a peanut allergy, specialists recommend consulting an allergist about available treatment options and maintaining vigilance in managing the condition.
