Man targets elderly victims in sweepstakes scam across multiple states, police say
ATOKA, Tenn. (WMC) - A Tipton County man is facing charges after investigators say he targeted an elderly victim in a multi-state sweepstakes scheme.
The Atoka Police Department arrested Steven Frickert, 67, on Thursday, Oct. 29, in connection with an investigation into the financial exploitation of an elderly and vulnerable adult and theft of property. Frickert received a $25,000 bond.
Investigators said the scheme began online when Frickert allegedly approached a vulnerable adult under the pretense of discussing financial security and planning for the financial futures of the victim’s children and grandchildren.
According to police, what began as an offer of assistance turned into repeated demands for money.
Frickert allegedly convinced the victim that the payments were required to stay eligible for a $25 million Publishers Clearing House sweepstakes prize.
The investigation has since expanded across multiple states, uncovering tens of thousands of dollars in losses and financial transactions.
Detectives are continuing to investigate and have identified additional people in other states who may have relevant information.
The Atoka Police Department reminds the public that legitimate sweepstakes will never require winners to pay money to collect a prize.
Officials advise citizens to be wary of anyone demanding payments to release winnings or maintain eligibility, and to talk with elderly relatives about unexpected financial requests and online relationships.
Anyone with information regarding this case is asked to call the Atoka Police Department at 901-837-5302.
