VIDEO: Driver allegedly tops 100 mph before crash, carjacking attempt in Pierce County
A 23-year-old man was arrested early Friday morning after deputies said he tried to carjack a woman on SR 512 after allegedly driving more than 100 mph and crashing.
At about 3:15 a.m., deputies saw a vehicle driving recklessly through a parking lot near 152nd Street South and Pacific Avenue South, according to the Pierce County Sheriff’s Office. That vehicle then took off.
“The vehicle continued east on Military Road without headlights and traveled at speeds exceeding 100 mph,” Pierce County Deputy Carly Cappetto said.
Deputies attempted a traffic stop, but the vehicle was already too far ahead. A short time later, another deputy located the vehicle near 112th Street East and Canyon Road. The driver eluded the deputy and attempted to enter eastbound SR 512, but lost control and drove down the on-ramp embankment, disabling the vehicle.

The suspect then fled on foot and allegedly tried to carjack a woman traveling eastbound on SR 512 by attempting to break her driver’s side window.
“He walks into the highway, stops the vehicle, and runs up to her driver’s side window and proceeds to essentially try to smash it out with his hands,” Cappetto said.
Deputies apprehended him before he could get inside. He surrendered without further incident.
“The man told deputies he had smoked methamphetamine shortly before the pursuit,” Cappetto said.
The man was booked into the Pierce County Jail on suspicion of robbery, driving under the influence of drugs, driving with a suspended license, and eluding law enforcement.
He also had multiple outstanding criminal arrest warrants from other jurisdictions.
