Daylight saving time ends this weekend. Here’s what you need to know

Before heading to bed on Halloween night, you may want to remember to turn your clocks back one hour. Daylight saving time officially comes to an end at 2 a.m. on Sunday, giving most Americans an extra hour for their day.

While many plan to use the bonus hour to sleep, others may spend it going out, catching up on their favorite show or even scrolling on social media.

Affect on the body

Although gaining an hour of sleep sounds like a benefit for most, the time change can impact your body’s circadian rhythm.

Even just a one-hour shift can temporarily disrupt sleep schedules, leaving some people feeling tired, sluggish or out of sync for several days. The body’s natural sleep cycle doesn’t automatically adjust when the clocks change.

Tips to adjust easily:

  • Start going to bed 15 to 20 minutes earlier several days before the time change.
  • Maintain a consistent sleep schedule.
  • Get plenty of natural sunlight during the day to help reset your body clock.
  • Avoid excessive Caffeine late in the day.

Household safety check

Many fire departments and safety organizations encourage people to use the time change as a reminder for household and driving reminders.

Consider adding these chores to your weekend checklist:

  • Replace batteries in smoke detectors.
  • Test carbon monoxide alarms.
  • Change HVAC and air conditioning filters.
  • Review emergency preparedness kits.
  • Properly dispose of expired medications.

The change can impact you even on the roadways. The Texas Department of Transportation encourages everyone to remain alert, particularly during the first few weeks after the time change when people are adjusting to driving and walking in the darker conditions.

Reduce your distractions behind the wheel to watch for pedestrians, cyclists and allow for extra stopping distance in low-light conditions.
