ABC13's Athlete of the Week: Ridge Point High School wide receiver duo shines among best in state
MISSOURI CITY, Texas (KTRK) -- As far as receiver duos go, Ridge Point High School has the top pair in the Houston area: seniors John Rangel and Suhaib Ramseur.
"Anytime one of us touches the ball, we're going to try to go score," Rangel said.
"You have to pick your poison. You're going to leave him one-on-one, that's something you don't want to do. Shade to his side, you going to leave me one on one, and you know, that's just that's what it is," Ramseur said.
Rangel is eighth in receiving yards in the Houston area with 10 touchdowns this season.
"Arguably, one of the best athletes on campus in anything," Ridge Point High School head coach Rick LaFavers said about Rangel. "He can go make the basketball team and soccer team. He plays baseball, and he's in AP courses and a straight-A student."
Ramseur is close behind his teammate in receiving yards, with 11 touchdowns this season.
"If he gets the ball, I'm cheering for him," Rangel said. "If I get the ball, he's cheering for me, so definitely we're brothers always."
Over the years, the Panthers have produced elite-level receivers.
"Coach LaFavers always likes to say we are walking on the shoulders of giants," Rangel said. "The people before us are greats and it's always good to look at who came before us and where they are now."
One or both will break the school's receiving yards record set by now TCU receiver Dane Jones.
"If he gets the record, I'm happy for him. I go do what I do," Ramseur said. "If I hit the record, he'll be happy for me. So we'll all celebrate for each other."
The receiving record would be great for either, but that's not the most important accomplishment they want this season.
"Knowing what we can do as a duo and as a team, this year we were really excited coming into this season and really expecting to go far, go to stay, hopefully go win a ring," Rangel said.
Keep an eye on Ridge Point as the regular season winds down and the playoffs start.
"We really try to focus on this week; this week's the state championship we'll get to next week. That's the state championship. It's a cliché, but, you know, 'One game at a time,'" LaFavers said.
