Woman records video of man appearing to inappropriately touch himself in Homestead
A woman is speaking out after she recorded a video of a man allegedly touching himself in Homestead.
The viral video sparked an investigation with Homestead Police.
The woman told NBC6 that she felt hopeless in that moment and was uncomfortable after it appeared that the man was touching himself inappropriately.
She said the incident happened about six months ago, but decided to post the video as a way to warn others who may encounter the man.
NBC6 has blurred the man’s face in the video because he is not facing any charges.
Samantha Ortiz said she had just gotten on the freeway in the Homestead area in broad daylight in April.
She told NBC6 that she started noticing a man in another vehicle trying to get her attention and appearing to follow her.
Ortiz said she quickly saw the man appeared to be inappropriately touching himself while looking at her, and she began recording him, but doesn’t believe he was aware of that fact.
Ortiz then called 911 and believes that the man took off when he noticed she was on the phone.
Ortiz said she posted the video on Sunday.
According to the Homestead Police Department, they reached out to Ortiz to investigate.
Authorities confirm the man has previous reports of similar allegations, but ultimately probably cause could not be established from the video.
“I was taken aback,” Ortiz said. “I didn’t know if he was going to follow me all the way home. I didn’t know if he was planning another thing. If he has gotten some of my information from my vehicle. So I was definitely frazzled. Shaking. Called my family. Didn’t know what to do.”
Homestead Police released the following statement:
“While multiple allegations warrant serious attention and thorough investigation, they do not, by themselves, establish probable cause or eliminate the legal and constitutional requirements for an arrest under Florida state statutes.”
When NBC6 asked Ortiz why she didn’t post the video sooner, she said friends and family discouraged her from doing so because they were afraid of what the man in the video would potentially do.
Homestead Police did not find probable cause to criminally charge the man in the video.
