South Carolina spotlight: Chester County 1914 Halloween -- and other news across the state

CHESTER COUNTY, S.C. (WBTV) - This Halloween, people in Tega Cay are putting their creativity on full display for Pumpkin Palooza.

On Tega Cay Drive, there are dozens of locally carved pumpkins at the city sign by Memorial Gardens on display through Sunday. The display is free and open from dusk until dark.

Sigmon Theatrical and its actors are getting into the Halloween and historical spirit this year as they get ready for Ghosts of the Revolution. It’s not just about getting spooked but it’s a chance to learn a little history.

Ghost of the Revolution is Friday night at Catawba Park from 7 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. It’s set in 1776 and will have free tours where you can hear stories of the people who helped shape our country’s founding.

Ghosts of the Revolution was financed with state funds from the South Carolina American Revolution Sestercentennial Commission, or SC250.

On Friday, the Chester County Historical Society is hosting ghost tours and on Halloween its teaming up with the Charlotte Area Paranormal Society for a paranormal investigation.

“There are spirits everywhere in this town,” said Historical Society Administrator Elizabeth Anderson.

Anderson has worked at the Chester County 1914 Jail where the tours are being held for more than a decade. She says she’s had plenty of encounters.

“However, I have a very good relationship with the ghosts here. So, I’ve never had anything terrible happen,” Anderson said.

Those experiences include an encounter she believes may have saved her life after she fell off a stool, nearly hitting her head on a table’s edge. “I could feel hands on my head,” guiding her to safety.

Paranormal experts will lead an investigation, unlocking this jail’s oldest secrets and hearing stories from around the county and beyond.

“These are professionals, they know what they’re doing. Everybody that comes on the paranormal tour, normally gets some type of evidence,” Anderson said.
