AirBnB ramps up Halloween anti-party technology in Memphis as neighbors call for peace and quiet
MEMPHIS, Tenn. (WMC) - Airbnb is activating heightened anti-party technology across Memphis this Halloween weekend, aiming to stop disruptive house parties before they start.
The short-term rental company has enforced a global ban on disruptive parties since 2020. However, during high-volume holiday weekends like Halloween and the Fourth of July, the company deploys automated booking defenses targeting higher-risk reservations.
“We look at hundreds of different signals to determine if a reservation might be of a higher risk of a party,” said Javier Hernandez, Senior Communications Manager at Airbnb. “This can include things like whether or not the reservation was made last minute or the proximity of the person who made that reservation to the address of that listing.”
During Halloween weekend last year, Airbnb says the algorithm deterred roughly 195 people in Memphis from booking entire homes. Across Tennessee, party complaints were reported in just 0.04% of total reservations in 2025.
For Memphis residents living near short-term rentals, the extra layer of scrutiny is a relief.
“I think it’s a very good thing. They pretty much have gotten way out of hand,” said William Bynum, a Memphis resident. “I feel sorry for the neighbors and having to put up with stuff like that... our city needs to be more of a family-oriented area rather than letting things get completely out of hand.”
With the University of Memphis celebrating homecoming this weekend, some travelers seeking last-minute, whole-home accommodations may find themselves flagged by the system.
Hernandez noted that travelers redirected by the filter can still book private rooms or hotels through the platform.
Anyone who believes their reservation was blocked in error is encouraged to contact Airbnb customer support for assistance.
“It’s really important that we prevent these disruptive type of parties from taking place and that’s really our priority, the piece of mind of the community but also, if anyone believes that their booking might have been blocked by mistake they can always reach out to Airbnb and we’re happy to take a look at that.”
Airbnb said this algorithm won’t just scare off ghouls and goblins, they’ll awaken these same anti-party spells to keep guests from having parties on New Year’s Eve and the Fourth of July.
