2 accused of stealing over $1K in items, including Pokémon box sets from Hialeah GameStop, cops say
Two people accused of going into a GameStop store in Hialeah and stealing merchandise, including Pokémon box sets, were arrested on Thursday, authorities said.
Melissa Castro, 38, and Jose Nunez, 38, were charged with third-degree grand theft.
Castro on Friday refused to appear in court, while Nunez did.
A judge set both their bond at $2,500.
According to authorities, on Monday, the two were seen going into the Game Stop at 1001 West 49th Street and then went off in different directions in the store.
An arrest report said surveillance video inside the store captured Castro and Nunez grabbing several items, including Pokémon box sets, which totaled over $1,130.
The pair then ran past cashiers and left the store, the report said.
After they left, the report said, a witness was able to take a picture of the vehicle they were driving, and detectives were able to match the car’s tag to a rental location in Miami, the report said.
Detectives then met with the owner, who gave them information about Castro and Nunez, which matched the descriptions of the people who were caught on surveillance video, the report said.
Three days after the incident, the report said, detectives were able to learn that the suspects’ vehicle had been in the parking lot of a motel in Miami Springs at different times.
During a search of the area, the vehicle was found at the same motel in Miami Springs, and Nunez was seen going into the car and attempting to leave, the report said.
Nunez was then stopped and taken into custody, and then Castro walked outside to see what was going on, and she was also taken into custody, the report said.
The two matched the descriptions of the suspects seen in the surveillance video, and they were taken to the Hialeah Police station, where they refused to speak.
Castro and Nunez were then taken to the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center.
