‘A little bit of joy': Meet the kind folks behind MGH's adorable NICU photoshoots
Every Halloween, and on plenty of other holidays, too, hospitals around Boston share photos of adorably costumed babies who are being treated in the NICU.
In neonatal intensive care units — the full name for the NICU — every milestone counts, and staff keep up the costume traditions to give kids and parents something to celebrate. We caught up with the people at Massachusetts General Hospital who’ve made the work their mission.
“I think that there is a lot of, like, PTSD that parents actually experience from being here,” said registered nurse Mariah Arlin, who was wearing a shirt that said “NICU boo crew.” “It’s a hard place to be, but [we’re] trying to make those positive memories and trying to give them some some happiness while they’re here.”

For Jeffrey Andree, of the hospital’s photography department, the work has become personal. He’s been taking the photos for holiday shoots for years, but over a year ago, his daughter spent nearly a month in the very same NICU.
“Seeing your child in one of these units is not fun, and having just a little bit of joy … the smiles on the parents’ faces and the kids, the staff loves it and it’s just a complete morale booster,” Andree said.
His daugher is now 19 months old and doing great.
