Teen sentenced to 7 years for crash that killed Prince George's County mother
A teen was sentenced to seven years in prison for the crash that killed Prince George’s County mother Shauntee Canty.
Michael Collins, 18, was driving the stolen vehicle when it slammed into Canty’s car in August 2025 on Sheriff Road in the Landover area.
Canty was driving her autistic son to a therapy appointment when the teen ran a red light and crashed. Collins, who was 16 at the time of the accident, was driving somewhere between 63 and 76 mph.
Collins previously pled guilty to negligent manslaughter and auto theft and was charged as an adult. The teen faced a maximum 15 years in prison, the state asked for seven. Canty’s family said that is not enough time.
“I really don’t feel justice got served, because the little time that he did get, my grandkids still are not going to get their mother back and I am not going to get my daughter back,” Carletta Chase, Canty’s mother, said. “He can always get back out and be on the street, but Shauntee can’t.”
“I feel as though he need more time. Again, being in jail is something temporary, my sister’s life got stolen from us, we can’t get that back, we’re never going to get that back, we’re never going to get her back, her kids are not going to get their mom back,” Erica Chase, Canty’s sister, said. “So, the little bit of time he is serving, I don’t feel like that’s justice.”
In a statement he read in court, Collins said he was sorry about the accident and that he took full responsibility.
The judge said he hoped Collins would use the time in prison to become a better man.
