San Diego County prepares for rainy Halloween weekend

It’s Halloween weekend, which could mean you’re putting the finishing touches on your costume, getting the candy bowl filled, and this year, closely watching the forecast.

For the first time in nearly 40 years, San Diego could have a rainy Halloween. So, rain this time of year is pretty rare, which is why so many events, aside from trick-or-treating, can be outside, like The Haunted Trail at Balboa Park.

For years, Scott Struever has had a major hand in the building of the attraction.

“I’m the Jack-O-Lantern of all trades,” he said.

Braving this mile-long haunt is all part of the Halloween thrill to get scared by some well-known “celebrities”, like Michael Myers and Freddy Krueger. If they don’t scare you, something surely will, and this weekend that very thing could be the rain that’s in the forecast on Halloween.

“The rain in October during the run is really a problem,” Struever said. “Our floors are wood, and so they get pretty slick; we have a lot of electricity as well, so if it starts pouring, we’ll shut it down, unfortunately.”

That call hasn’t been made, but if it is, organizers say it will be posted on their Instagram handle. Struever says it would have to be raining heavily to prompt the trail to close, but it would be out of safety to keep the actors, staff, and customers safe.

“Fingers crossed that rain doesn’t come until well after 10 o’clock Saturday,” Struever said.

The staff at Christie’s Place is hoping for the same for their Día de los Muertos display at their Bankers Hill office.

“You know, I think it’s going to be here, rain or shine; we’re here for the community,” Christie’s Place Executive Director Rhea Vanbrocklin said.

Their event is Friday night, but with more rain in the forecast over the weekend, some of the décor, like the Carinas, might need to be relocated.

“They’ll probably be put inside somewhere where it’s a little bit safer and won’t be affected by the weather,” Vanbrocklin said.

Some San Diegans, like Annaka Pennersmith, have strong feelings about the rain chances.

“I love rain, every day except for on Halloween,” Pennersmith said. “Not my favorite, but nevertheless, the fun will persist; the candy won’t melt. It will be okay.”

For Annaka, it means bringing an umbrella and recommending others plan to do the same.

“For everyone else’s costume who might be affected, all peace, all love on that journey, please wear a jacket.”

So, this Halloween, preparation is key. However, you plan to get into the spirit; know that plans could change, but here’s to hoping they won’t change too much.

“This week so far has been booming. The last week of Halloween is always great and busy, and honestly that brings more energy to the actors, the more people we have here, the better it is for everybody on both sides.”
