JSO receives federal funding boost through Model Cities Initiative

The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office has been selected as one of four law enforcement agencies nationwide to participate in the U.S. Department of Justice’s new Model Cities Initiative. Jacksonville will share in a nearly $300 million national federal commitment aimed at bolstering local public safety and expanding investigative capacity.

The multiyear initiative will fund enhancements to forensic, investigative and technological capabilities for the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office. The expanded resources are also intended to support partner law enforcement agencies throughout Northeast Florida.

Sheriff T.K. Waters praised the federal investment and the partnership between local and federal authorities. “This is a tremendous honor for Jacksonville and a testament to the progress we have made together in public safety. It is also a powerful example of what local and federal partners can accomplish when we share a common mission,” Waters said.

“We are deeply grateful to the Department of Justice for standing shoulder to shoulder with us and investing in the safety of our community.

“This generational investment will allow us to build on our success, strengthen our investigative capabilities and give our men and women the technology and resources they need to stay a step ahead of criminals. Together, we are committed to making Jacksonville one of the safest cities in America.”

According to the department’s press release, the agency’s crime-reduction efforts rely on a data-driven approach. That strategy combines proactive enforcement, community intervention, technology deployment, partner agency coordination and community engagement.

Specific investment amounts and project timelines will be announced in the coming weeks by the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office in conjunction with the U.S. Department of Justice.
