New Orleans Police issue safety reminders ahead of Halloween weekend

NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) - As multiple events kick off across the city for Halloween weekend, the New Orleans Police Department is urging residents and visitors to remain alert and take safety precautions.

NOPD officers will maintain an increased presence throughout the city to patrol neighborhoods, answer service calls and provide security at public gatherings.

The weekend’s festivities begin Friday evening, with crowds expected at local high school football games.

Celebrations will peak Saturday as costumed trick-or-treaters take to neighborhood streets and revelers gather at private parties, commercial venues and the French Quarter. City Park’s Tad Gormley Stadium is also hosting a matchup between St. Augustine and Edna Karr high schools.

Events continue Sunday with Day of the Dead festivities, featuring the Dia de los Muertos Festival in the French Quarter and the Krewe de Mayahuel Procession and Fiesta in the Bywater and St. Roch neighborhoods.

Police issued the following safety reminders for the weekend:

• Stay in groups: Stick together and avoid walking alone into unfamiliar or poorly lit areas.
• Protect trick-or-treaters: Children should stay with a parent or guardian at all times and wear bright, reflective clothing. Parents are advised to inspect all candy before children eat it. Drivers should slow down and watch carefully for pedestrians.
• Park legally and securely: Parking enforcement officers will monitor and cite violations.
• Drink responsibly: Designate a sober driver or use other means of transportation. Never accept drinks from strangers or leave beverages unattended.
• • Utilize rideshare services if needed to ensure a safe ride home.
• Report suspicious activity: Contact police immediately regarding any unusual behavior, even amid Halloween celebrations.
