Chevel Shepherd returns to the stage for charity concert
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – New Mexico singer Chevel Shepherd returned to the stage in Albuquerque to raise money for the Salvation Army rehabilitation program.
Shepherd performed at the benefit concert after the Salvation Army asked her to help raise money for its rehabilitation program, which provides housing, meals, clothing and therapy.
“They reached out and they asked if I would do a benefit concert for Salvation Army, and of course, as a guest, I love to do benefit shows, and I love to give back to things that are important and that help communities in need. And so it’s it’s super special,” said Chevel Shepherd.
Shepherd won “The Voice” in 2018 after teaming up with Kelly Clarkson. She said the Albuquerque show marked her first performance since having her daughter in February.
“I’m not gonna lie. I’m a little nervous,” said Shepherd. “I used to not get nervous, but I do a little bit now because I don’t do it as often. But I’m really excited, and it’s even more special now that I have a little girl in the audience, you know, watching me that I kind of get to set an example for.”
Shepherd said one of her favorite original songs is “Mama Got the Chair,” a response to George Strait’s “The Chair.”
“My favorite original is called Mama Got the Chair. It’s a pretty cool story,” said Shepherd. “So the George Strait song “The Chair,” mine is basically the woman’s response to that. So it kind of tells the woman’s POV of the chair, and it’s super special and people seem to to really enjoy that.”
While she’s returning to the stage, she also shared support for New Mexican Lillie Kolich, who is competing on Season 30 of “The Voice” and is expected to perform next week.
“I’m rooting for you and you know, just follow your dreams,” said Shepherd. “Like it’s it’s so amazing what something like that can do for for your life. And it it’s it was a dream come true for me. And so I’m really I’m I’m rooting for her. That’s amazing.”
Kolich earned a four-chair turn in her blind audition earlier this month, made it through the battle round and is now headed to cut week.
“I am going to be doing a very very out of the box song choice for Cut Week, and my intention with that is that it makes me stand out because I know that vocally on my team I’m not the strongest vocally, but I know that my like uniqueness is kind of the thing that I think people are drawn to about my artistry,” said Lillie Kolich.
Cut week airs Monday starting at 8 p.m. on KOB 4.
