What is a persimmon?

A persimmon is a bright orange fruit, often about the size of a tomato or small apple. Ripe persimmons taste sweet, with notes of apricot, date or cinnamon.
Some varieties are crisp and can be eaten like an apple, while others must ripen until very soft, according to UF IFAS.
