the fatal stabbing of 29-year-old Latavius Owens
Police have identified the man killed in a stabbing at Boston's South Station last week during a busy evening commute.
MBTA Transit Police initially responded to the report of a stabbing around 5:30 p.m. on Aug. 12, Boston police said. A man was found suffering from a stab wound inside the station and was taken to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead.
He was identified Monday by Boston police as 29-year-old Latavius Owens, of Memphis, Tennessee.
Investigators believe the victim and another person were involved in an altercation on an escalator that leads to an exit from the Red Line. Blood could be seen on an escalator that was blocked off by police tape at the MBTA station.
Commuters told NBC10 Boston that they were shocked by what happened.
"It's definitely alarming and not somewhere that I would want to be first hand," one told us.
State Sen. Nick Collins said he believes this is an isolated incident, however, saying, "I just want to let everyone know that our transit system is safe."
No arrests have bene made, and Boston police said they are still actively reviewing the facts and circumstances surrounding the incident. Anyone who saw what happened is asked to call 617-343-4470. Anonymous tips can also be left by calling 1-800-494-8477 or by texting "TIP" to 27463.
